The English language is the global lingua franca. Professional fluency is necessary for interlingual communication and seizing global opportunities, such as scholarships, jobs and projects, making it either a door or a barrier to success. The Tanzanian education system poses a challenge to mastering English, especially in primary schools. In public schools, Swahili is the language of instruction, with English taught as a standalone subject; the inverse applies in private schools. From secondary school onwards, English becomes the language of instruction, creating an abrupt switch for public school pupils that affects learning. Teachers highlight the lack of English practice beyond class, English being a third language in rural areas, and teachers' limited competency as key reasons for poor performance in national exams. The project leverages Generative AI, proven effective in second-language learning, to provide practice for pupils and teachers and enhance teaching and learning.
