The government of Uganda provides soft loans to its most vulnerable populations with the aim to improve their access to financial services and equip them with skills for enterprise growth. Half of these beneficiaries have invested these loans in livestock production, but the return on investment remains disappointing due to the limited support in managing infectious diseases. With this project we aim to improve the management of worm infections in livestock contributing to the livelihood and food security of single mothers and in child-headed households in northern Uganda. To achieve this, we identified three changes: (i) improve the accessibility to low-cost, locally available and efficacious plant-based treatments, (ii) Gulu University becomes more research-active in worm infections in livestock, (iii) farmers, paravets, and animal extension workers are empowered to manage worm infections in livestock.
